My Moms Cream Cheese Filled Cupcakes

Lately, I've been craving my mom's chocolate cream cheese-filled cupcakes. These cupcakes are perfect for your next picnic, game-day, or holiday get-together. Just a touch more effort, and you have a sweet treat that tastes as if it came from a 5-star bakery.

Before we start, you could certainly go the extra mile and make your cupcake batter and frosting from scratch. But I promise everyone will think these are made from scratch when they bite into the extra creamy & chocolatey center goodness.

Elevate your cupcake game:

Always bake on the center rack to avoid burning the top or bottom of the cupcake.

Transfer the cupcakes to a cooling rack (a couple of minutes after removing them from the oven) so they don't continue to bake in the pan and then dry out.

Undermixing is better than overmixing! Overmixing cake batter can cause the gluten to strengthen and create a dense and chewy texture! For a softer and less chewy cupcake, use a whisk or fork to mix the cake batter instead of a mixer. And stop mixing as soon as the dry ingredients are combined with the wet ingredients.


Extra Chocolatey Cream Cheese Filled Cupcakes

Ingredients: for the cupcake 

  • Your favorite boxed chocolate cake mix + the ingredients to make the mix

  • Your favorite frosting (we use Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge)

Ingredients: for the cream cheese center

  • 8 oz cream cheese, room temp

  • 1/2 cup white sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips; mini work best!

Directions:

  1. Mix the cake batter per the instructions on the box but don't bake! Set aside.

  2. In a different bowl, cream together the sugar and room temperature cream cheese, and then stir in the egg until smooth. Lastly, fold in the chocolate chips.

  3. Preheat the oven to 350 F and line or grease a cupcake pan.

  4. Fill each cupcake tin with two tablespoons of cake batter (approximately half full), and then add a tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture to the center, lightly pushing it into the cake batter.

  5. Bake per the directions of the cake mix box.

  6. Let cool, and frost with your favorite chocolate icing.

  7. Try not to devour the entire pan! But of course, it’s okay if you do :)
